Notary Services

The Cannan Town Clerk’s Office provides Notary Public services for documents requiring notarization. A Notary Public serves as an official witness to the signing of important documents, verifies identity, and administers oaths or affirmations. 

The Canaan Town Hall currently has three commissioned Notaries Public available to assist you:
  • Johanna Mann
  • Emily Peterson
  • Rebecca Juchert-Derungs

Notary services are provided on a walk-in basis during regular office hours, subject to staff availability. Calling ahead to confirm that a Notary is available is suggested but not required, as availability may vary. 


Identification

All signers must present valid, government-issued photo identification. Acceptable forms include:

  • Driver’s License

  • State-Issued Identification Card

  • U.S. Passport

  • U.S. Military ID

Important Information for Signers

To ensure your document can be notarized, please:

✔ Bring valid photo identification
 ✔ Do not sign the document in advance (sign in front of the Notary)
✔ Ensure all required sections of the document are complete
✔ Bring any required witnesses
✔ Be aware that the Notary may refuse service if requirements are not met


Documents We Cannot Notarize

Please note that the Town Clerk’s Office cannot notarize:

  • Wills or codicils

  • Powers of attorney requiring legal review

  • Real estate closing documents requiring attorney participation

  • Immigration documents requiring specialized certification

  • Documents written in a foreign language without an English section

  • Documents that require the Notary to provide legal advice
