Open Burning Permits

Open Burning permits are available free of charge and are issued for 30-day periods. Permits can be found at the Town Clerk's Office or can be filled out online here and returned to the Town Clerks Office.

Permits may only be obtained by the property owner or an authorized representative and are valid for the burning of brush only. Guidelines are as listed below and must be followed:

  • The permit is only valid when it has been signed off by the Local Burning Official. Anyone with a valid permit must call 860-364-0909 (Stanley MacMillan, Jr., Fire Marshal) on each day burning is planned and provide name, address and the date.
  • The permit does not relieve the permittee of any legal liability, which may be incurred as a result of the fire.
  • Failure to adhere to the conditions of the permit may result in penalties and/or other enforcement actions.
  • Open burning is limited to the burning of brush only, on residential property upon which the permittee resides.  Only brush may be burned.
  • At no time should the fire be left unattended.
  • All reasonable safety precautions are to be taken: including clearing of grass and trees in the burn area, wetting down the surrounding area, and the placement of fire extinguishers and hose lines.
  • Burning may only be conducted during the hours of 10:00AM to 5:00 PM. All fires must be completely extinguished by 5:00 PM. All embers and coals must be extinguished and wetted.
